    Ballard has an opportunity for a General Manager (GM) – Emerging Markets who will be a catalyst leader and change agent that leads the overall financial, sales and operational performance of a newly created business unit. The successful candidate will be tasked to set a vision and a strategy and be able to articulate that vision and strategy throughout the organization and effectively rally the business around it. The new GM will be “forward thinking,” while equally operationally engaged in a manner that helps the team build and accomplish its goals and develop the next generation of leaders for long-term sustainable growth of the business.

    The General Manager of the Emerging Markets business will be responsible for managing the business unit and grow revenue. Emerging Markets represent new opportunities as well as other smaller revenue applications not captured within the Bus, Truck, Rail, Marine and Stationary Power business units. Ballard has a strong history of providing technology solutions for such opportunities and will now align these opportunities with Ballard’s core products in order to leverage the products and technology we are scaling for mass markets. Emerging market activities currently include off-road, light duty vehicle, auxiliary power units and forklift applications.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Lead the business with support from corporate support functions to achieve their annual operating plans (AOP) as well as execute on their strategic plans for growth, notably by having the talent and performance driven culture to exceed business results.

    Play a lead role in developing strategy, growing revenue, margin and operating income, managing cost, and working capital to drive customer satisfaction.

    Skilled in working with emerging markets and advanced technology and will be a strong advocate of finding customer centric solutions in enable overall acceleration of the business.

    Adept in functioning within a global business that functions within a matrix structure of the business unit, regions, and corporate functions.

    Fully participate in product strategy incorporating industry trends, voice of the customer and efficient product cost.

    Demonstrate a balanced approach to challenge the status quo (both internally and with customers) while also respecting the track record on which Ballard’s brand reputation is founded.

    Able to assess new industry applications and create a business case in order to validate pursuing this application. Be able to innovate and disrupt within this industry by displaying tactical and entrepreneurial talent and experience while synchronizing with the current and future capabilities of Ballard.

    Year one Critical Success Factors:

    Manage commercial and service activities to achieve plan objectives in terms of sales EBIT, and market share. Continue to develop new accounts and product offerings while strengthening the existing product lines and distribution channels.

    Develop any product plans for the business unit in unison with overall global technology and manufacturing platforms.

    Partner with regions and corporate functions to define business unit marketing, sales/service strategies and create plans to implement these strategies with the objective of growing the business in specific regions.

    Represent the company in relationships with major customers and potential customers, industry groups and public/governmental affairs.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Undergraduate degree in engineering/sciences/technology and an MBA preferred.

    Minimum of ten years progressive experience in commercial and operational management (“commercial” is defined as strategy, sales, marketing, pricing and/or business development and “operational” is defined as manufacturing, plant management, supply chain, and/or technical/engineering roles), preferably within a medium to large sized B2B environment.

    Global business experience with acumen to operate and travel in multiple regions and cultures.

    P&L experience of at least $50 million would be ideal, as would experience with highly engineered products and services. Experience leading the growth of a business as a Business Unit GM or President.

    Fuel cell sector experience preferred but not essential.

    Visionary, and a passionate leader who truly owns the function, and is dedicated to creating a world leading capability that continuously improves.

    Analytical thinker to ensure understanding and interpretation of business revenues, profit, and general performance trends.

    Excellent problem-solver, with specific focus on developing new, creative, and challenging ways to achieve revenues in a changing business environment.

    Sales experience in emerging and developed markets with a tenacity to create new markets.

    Demonstrated success in developing, implementing, and executing strategic business plans.

    Knowledge, experience, and success of growing businesses in high growth, “new” marketplaces.

    Combination of technical and commercial acumen.

    LEADERSHIP SKILLS:

    Highly self-aware, recognizing the impact of approach and behaviors on peers, direct reports, customers, and other internal and external contacts.

    Defines a vision for the organization, rallies the team around the vision, sets high expectations and manages to expectations.

    Proven ability to execute on the strategy, lead a full P&L and collaborate effectively in a matrix organization, i.e., non-hierarchical business environment.

    Financial acumen, ability to articulate and present the P&L financials.

    Communicates effectively with all levels within the organization.

    Proven analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving capabilities with extensive experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

    Excellent people management skills: a motivating, decisive leader with a proven record of achieving excellence through people and building high performance teams.

    Hands-on, non-bureaucratic leadership style, yet able to delegate and hold staff accountable for delivery of common goal and strategy, demanding of the team, yet fair minded.
