    Job Description:

    The International Student Coordinator is responsible for providing specialized assistance and support to international students through their lifecycle at Langara from newly-admitted student to recent graduate. The incumbent provides support and instrumental assistance in international student transition to Langara (both pre-arrival and on arrival to the College). As a Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA), the incumbent advises international students on matters related to study and work permit requirements to ensure that students make informed decisions for themselves (and their families, if applicable) as it relates to immigration. The International Student Coordinator delivers quality support services to international students in Regular Studies and Continuing Studies through pre-arrival and first-semester advising, on-going support, immigration advising, and special projects. The incumbent is an immigration subject matter expert for Langara students, and the broader Langara community. This position provides support to faculty and staff with regards to international students in Regular and Continuing Studies.

     

    Qualifications Required

     

    Education

    Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate discipline such as Social Services, Social Science, Humanities, Intercultural Communication, or International Education.

    Minimum four (4) years of relevant advisory experience in a cross-cultural educational setting including two (2) years’ experience in the design, planning, and delivery of support services/programs to students, preferably international students.

    An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

    Certification from Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) as a Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) and membership in good standing with ICCRC, OR completion of the RISIA certification within one (1) year of hire.

    Strong knowledge of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) policies and procedures

    General knowledge of other cultures, their history, religions, norms and customs.

    Intermediate to advance knowledge in the use of computer applications including word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (Excel), e-mail and Internet searching.

     

    Skills & Abilities

    Fluency in one or more of the following languages is preferred: Mandarin, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Portuguese, Japanese, or Korean.

    Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English, including cross-cultural communication skills.

    Excellent public speaking and presentation skills, including the ability to deliver presentations to large audiences.

    Ability to provide excellent customer service skills in a cross-cultural setting.

    Ability to research, design and present program information.

    Ability to keep up-to-date with current and emerging immigration legislation, interpretations and best practices within the field of immigration.

    Ability to analyze and integrate immigration legislation along with College policy and procedures.

    High attention to detail and accuracy.

    Ability to effectively work with and provide information, assistance and related services to international students, faculty, and staff.

    Ability to handle sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy and exercise judgment in interactions with international students.

    Strong decision-making and analytical skills, including problem solving and needs analysis.

    Ability to work effectively as part of a student service team, as well as independently.

    Ability to provide leadership in organizing and motivating individuals and groups of people.

    Demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity and adaptation skills.

    Experience utilizing existing and developing virtual communication methods, e.g. webinars, social media platforms
