Sustainability Specialist

Ballard has a position available for a Sustainability Specialist. The Sustainability Specialist will report to the Corporate EHS Manager with a dotted line to the ESG Director and will be responsible for a variety of tasks focusing on the integration of climate risks and GHG reduction goals into Ballard practices

Responsibilities:

Provide guidance on climate and GHG issues, risks, opportunities and best practices

Engage leadership and collaborate across the organization to raise awareness of climate and GHG reduction opportunities and further integrate sustainability within decision-making and culture

Participating in the creation, identification and implementation of solutions for GHG emissions reduction to achieve net carbon zero by 2030

Identify opportunities for innovative approaches for GHG emission reduction and develop solid contextual understanding of underlying success factors and development of metrics

Lead internal coordination to identify, document and disseminate information on sustainable technologies and solutions, including costs, supply chain, impact on embodied and operational carbon, and other sustainability metrics

Actively track emerging sustainability trends in the market including goals, regulatory requirements, voluntary standards, etc. to inform ongoing research and development for the next generation of product

Participate in broader ESG strategy implementation activities, including participating in Ballard ESG Council of Champions on behalf of EHS as appropriate

Related Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

3-5 years of related experience

University degree in engineering, economics, public policy, planning or similar, preferably with a specialist in GHG policy

Strong passion for sustainability and understanding of broad concepts that are important to sustainability such as embodied and operational carbon, Life Cycle Assessments, circular economy, and climate adaptation

An understanding of GHG management and reporting regulations

A proven ability to make important, but difficult, things happen

An understanding of different mechanisms by which GHG reductions can be achieved

Excellent project management skills and the ability to keep multiple projects, on different timelines and with different structures, moving forward

Excellent skills in the areas of time management, prioritization with the ability to juggle multiple priorities

Proven ability to work with diverse stakeholder groups with varying interests across multiple locations to reach mutually beneficial outcomes
